the physics of attention
attention behaves like gravity. it pulls hardest where it’s least returned.
whoever cares less sets the field. the disinterested person becomes the dense object around which everyone else orbits. scarcity creates mass, & mass bends focus.
this applies to everything. in social life, in markets, in culture. the less accessible something is, the more gravitational it becomes. mystery generates pull. clarity repels.
that’s why silence feels powerful. it forces interpretation. when someone doesn’t respond, your mind rushes to fill the void, projecting depth, story, meaning. absence amplifies value because it demands imagination.
this is how attention economies work. influencers, brands, even governments exploit it. they control flow not by giving more, but by withholding just enough. they let your curiosity do the labor. the less they explain, the more you look.
the same physics applies to desire. we chase what resists us because resistance creates potential energy. mutual interest is stable, static… no orbit, no tension, no movement. but one sided interest is motion. that’s story.
attention is never symmetric. it flows toward imbalance. that imbalance is what makes systems dynamic, like relationships, markets, ideas. perfect reciprocity is stasis, & stasis is death.
so when you find yourself magnetized by someone who doesn’t care, or obsessed with an idea that won’t yield, remember… it’s not magic. it’s gravity.
everything interesting exerts resistance. everything easy loses mass.
